A quick look at the gear we use for map and compass work. Orienteering, geocaching and hiking are great fun and get you out to see how your skills are and your gear performs
These are the GPS and Radio units we use while GeoCaching. A Garmin Rino 110, Garmin Rino 120, Garmin eTrex Legend, Motorola Talkabout T6320 and a cheaper Motorola
The total distance of the Miller Creek Trail in 16.2 miles round trip in a very remote location. The highest elevation is 8482 feet and the lowest elevation is 4250 feet. Latitude 32.152 Longitude:-110.48333 Neither dogs nor weapons are allowed. The trail starts out in the Miller Creek streambed. The last half mile of the trail is very steep.
We took a few of the electronic outdoor equipment out to compare how they work. We compare features of the Garmin Legend GPS, the Garmin Rino 120 GPS and a Motorola Talkabout T6320 Radio. These are some of the most feature rich units we have found over the years at prices we could afford. These units give us a lot of information and abilities when camping, hiking, hunting, fishing and geocaching. Usually we pass the units around or if everyone has their own radio / GPS then the Rino is carried and the other two units are carried in the pack as backups.
Together these three units offer; two GPS Units, two Two Way Radios, two Compasses, three Altimeters, a radio scanner, national weather radio, barometer, sun and moon charts and a lot more.

I have used many compasses over the years and this simple Tekker 420 made by Silva remains my favorite. It is small light and compact and the mirror means you always have a signal mirror too. This is a great ma compass and it works great on hikes and while hunting as well. I have used this compass for many years now and if I ever lost or broke it I would think real hard before buying anything else to replace it. It has these features; 4 position positive stop mirror with V notch, Declination scale, 1/20-inch and millimeter rules, 2.25in x 3.3125in, weighs just 1.5 oz., and it has a clear base plate for easy mapping and plotting
